Gödel, Hawking and a Theory-of-Everything

Imagine – if you can.. – eternal life.. – Rather than being blissful, would it  perhaps   be “the end of everything”, – complete stagnation, – an endless  nightmare.., and if so, – what would be the implications  for transhumanism..

Considerations of this kind are perhaps also very relevant to physicist’s /cosmologist’s search for a Theory of Everything..

Stephen Hawking was originally a believer in such a “Theory of Everything”, i.e.  a consistent, non-selfreferential theory capable of accurately predicting the outcome of any experiment, – but, after considering Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, – concluded that one was not obtainable:

“Some people will be very disappointed if there is not an ultimate theory, that can be formulated as a finite number of principles.I used to belong to that camp, but I have changed my mind. I’m now glad that our search for understanding will never come to an end, and that we will always have the challenge of new discovery. Without it, we would stagnate.”

Gödel’s incompleteness theorem is listed as # 1 of Ten Strange Things About The Universe
